Who can I call for a plumber in New Westminster at any hour?
Encano Plumbing is a family-owned plumbing and heating company dispatched from Richmond that serves all of New Westminster, from Sapperton and Queen’s Park to Queensborough. The phone line is open 24/7 for calls and texts at (604) 764-2031. Travel time is quoted before we come out, and the price is agreed in writing before any work begins, with a 1-year workmanship warranty.
Plumbing in one of the oldest cities in BC
New Westminster was founded in 1858 and served as capital of the Colony of British Columbia until 1866, so its housing goes back further than almost anywhere else in the Lower Mainland. Queen’s Park alone has hundreds of detached houses, and the oldest date from before 1900 through the late 1920s. Heritage rules there make owners repair and preserve rather than tear down, which means a lot of century-old plumbing is still working, or trying to.
In houses of that age we often find a patchwork: original cast iron drain stacks, sections of galvanized steel supply line, copper added in a later renovation and plastic from the most recent one. Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, so water pressure fades slowly until a tap barely runs. Some homes in Queen’s Park, Glenbrook North and Sapperton still heat with a boiler and cast iron radiators, and those systems need someone who will keep them running, not just quote a replacement.
Because of the heritage controls, we plan work around the house. Access goes through basements and existing chases where possible, and we tell you before we cut into original plaster or trim, so the character of the home stays intact. Many of these houses were also added onto over the decades, with a basement suite or a back-porch bathroom plumbed by a previous owner. We trace where each line actually runs before quoting, because the drawing in your head and the pipes behind the wall rarely match.
Hillside streets above, a floodplain below
Most of New West climbs steeply from the Fraser River, with Columbia Street and the Quay at the bottom and Uptown around Sixth Street near the top. On a slope like that, a house can sit well below the street or perch above it. Sewer laterals run long and at odd grades, and older cast iron or clay lines crack or let roots in where the ground shifts. Slow basement drains and a gurgling floor drain are common first signs.
The city is also working through its combined sewers, where rain and household waste share one pipe. New storm sewers are going in under the West End and other catchments, with a target of no combined sewer overflows by 2075. During heavy fall rain, older combined lines carry far more water than usual, which is when a weak lateral or a missing backwater valve shows itself.
Queensborough is a different world. It sits on the eastern tip of Lulu Island, behind the dike, and makes up about two-thirds of the city’s floodplain. Ground water sits close to the surface, so crawl spaces stay damp, sump pumps work hard in winter and pipe fittings under the floor corrode faster than they would up the hill.
Walk-ups, towers and townhouses
Brow of the Hill and the streets around Moody Park are dense with three-storey rental walk-ups, a good number of them built in the 1960s, with shared laundry rooms and one boiler or hot water system for the whole building. When a main valve, a riser or a common tank fails, every suite feels it. We work with owners and property managers to isolate the problem, keep as many units in water as possible and put the repair price in writing first.
Downtown and along the Quay, newer concrete towers bring the opposite issue: tight mechanical closets, in-suite tankless or tank heaters, and leaks that travel to the suite below before anyone notices. Our thermal imaging leak detection helps find the source without opening more ceiling than needed. In Queensborough, many households live in newer townhouses and houses near Port Royal, where strata rules decide who pays for what, so we document the cause clearly for the council.

What we do differently in New Westminster
New West mixes three very different kinds of plumbing in twelve square kilometres. Here is how we handle each one.
Repair first in heritage homes
In Queen’s Park and Sapperton we look for the fix that keeps original radiators, stacks and finishes in place, and explain plainly when a section truly needs replacing.
Building-wide thinking for walk-ups
For apartment buildings in Brow of the Hill and Uptown, we plan shutoffs with the manager, warn tenants and quote shared-system repairs in writing before work starts.
Queensborough is our side of the river
Queensborough sits on Lulu Island, the same island as our Richmond base. Low ground, damp crawl spaces and hard-working sump pumps are the same conditions we deal with on our own side of the bridge.
Three languages on the phone
New West is a mixed city. Our team speaks English, Portuguese and Spanish, so you can explain the problem in the language you think in.
Most requested plumbing work in New Westminster
These are the jobs New West homes and buildings call us for most, with what usually drives them here.
- Boiler repairHeritage houses and older walk-ups often still heat with hot-water radiators. A seized pump or low pressure can leave a whole building cold on the first damp night of fall.Boiler Repair details
- Furnace repairPlenty of detached houses in Massey-Victory Heights, Connaught Heights and the West End heat with forced-air furnaces that work hardest from October to April.Furnace Repair details
- Drain cleaning and sewer linesLong laterals on hillside lots, older cast iron and clay pipe and tree roots in established neighborhoods make slow basement drains a frequent call.Drain Cleaning details
- Hot water tanks and tanklessFrom shared tanks in rental walk-ups to in-suite tankless units in Quay towers, no hot water affects more than one household here.Water Heater Repair details
- Leak detectionIn stacked condos downtown and in heritage homes with plaster walls, thermal imaging finds the leak before anyone opens a ceiling.Leak Detection & Repair details
- Emergency plumbingBurst lines, backups during heavy rain and flooded crawl spaces in Queensborough do not wait for business hours. Call or text any time.Emergency Plumber details
Getting to New Westminster from our Richmond base
Queensborough shares Lulu Island with Richmond, so the Westminster Highway and Highway 91 lead straight into it without crossing the river. For the mainland side of the city, Highway 91A and the Queensborough Bridge carry us over the North Arm of the Fraser and up into the West End, Uptown and Sapperton.
Traffic on the bridges changes with the hour, so we give you an honest arrival window when you call instead of a promise we cannot keep.
Outside Richmond, travel time is charged, and we quote it before we come out. If you go ahead with the work, you get a discount on that travel time.

Fall rain and the first cold nights in New West
The wet season and the heating season arrive together in October. Hillside drains and combined sewers take the first heavy rains, and boilers that sat idle all summer are asked to heat drafty heritage rooms again. An occasional Arctic outflow can also freeze pipes in unheated crawl spaces and exterior walls.
A boiler or furnace check in September and a look at your main drain before the rains catch most of these problems early. If something fails anyway, call or text us any hour.
Gas appliance work is done to BC code by a licensed gas fitter, with a permit pulled when the job requires one. If you smell gas, leave the home and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 and 911 from outside.

Flavio TruzziLocal Guide · 4 months agoI can't recommend Encano Plumbing & Drain enough! They came to replace my dishwasher and immediately ran into a problem left behind by the previous installers, a metal piece that had been incorrectly fitted and was completely blocking access to remove the old unit. Rather than giving up or charging me extra to come back another day, Ed handled it on the spot, cutting through the obstruction efficiently and professionally. What really stood out was how thorough and tidy he was throughout the whole job. He kept the work area clean, and didn't leave me with a mess to deal with, which honestly isn't always a given. On top of that, he went out of his way to help me get rid of the old dishwasher, which saved me a huge headache. This is exactly the kind of tradesperson you want: calm under pressure, resourceful when things don't go to plan, and genuinely helpful beyond just the bare minimum.
