Do I need a licensed gas fitter to run a gas line in BC?
Yes, for work done for you by someone else. In BC, gas work is regulated by Technical Safety BC, and many gas jobs need a permit and an inspection. Hooking up a new water heater, range, BBQ, dryer or fireplace means sizing the line, adding a shut-off valve and testing every joint for leaks. The Encano team does this work with a licensed gas fitter, with a permit when the job requires one.
Most Richmond homes already have natural gas from FortisBC for the furnace, boiler or hot water tank, which makes it easy to add a gas range, a BBQ on the deck, a gas dryer or a fireplace. The catch is the pipe: a new appliance has to be fed by a line that is the right size for everything already on the meter, with its own shut-off, solid supports and joints that hold pressure. The Encano team plans the run, installs it and tests it before the appliance is lit.
Our most common gas job is the water heater. Replacing a gas hot water tank, or switching to a tankless unit, means disconnecting and reconnecting the gas supply, checking the line can carry the new load, and making sure the venting is right. A tankless heater often needs more gas than the old tank, so we check the line size before you buy. We handle the gas connection, the venting and the permit as one job, and you get one flat price in writing before work starts.
When to call a gas fitter
Replacing a gas water heater
A new tank or tankless unit needs the gas reconnected, sized and leak tested.
Switching to a gas range or cooktop
A new line to the kitchen, with a shut-off valve behind the appliance.
Adding a BBQ or patio heater line
A permanent gas line to the deck or patio, so you stop refilling propane tanks.
Installing a gas dryer or fireplace
Each appliance needs a correctly sized line and a proper connection.
A faint gas smell near an appliance
Have the line and fittings checked. A strong smell means leave the home first.
Renovating or moving appliances
Old lines get capped or rerouted before the walls close up.
A new furnace or boiler
The gas connection is part of the install, checked and tested before start-up.

How a gas line job works
- 01
Call or text with the appliance
Tell us what you want to connect and where it goes. A photo of the spot and of the gas meter helps.
- 02
We check the route and the load
We look at the meter, the existing lines and the path for the new run, and confirm the line can carry the extra appliance.
- 03
Flat price, permit, then the work
You get one flat price in writing before work starts. When the job needs a permit, we pull it ourselves.
- 04
Leak test, inspection, warranty
Every joint is tested before the appliance is lit. Permitted work is finished once it passes inspection, and the job carries a 1-year workmanship warranty.
How gas line work is priced
We do not post a price list, because the price depends on the service, the time and day you need us, and whether it is an emergency. You get one flat price in writing before work starts.

Book a gas fitter, or leave the home first?
Most gas calls are planned work. A strong gas smell is not, and it starts with FortisBC and 911.
Call or text us when
- You are replacing a gas water heater or switching to tankless
- You want a new line for a range, BBQ, dryer or fireplace
- You notice a faint smell near one appliance that comes and goes
- You are renovating and need lines moved or capped
Leave the home first when
- You smell a strong rotten egg odor inside the home
- You hear hissing from a gas line, fitting or appliance
- A CO alarm is going off, or people feel dizzy or sick indoors
- Leave right away, then call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 and 911 from outside
Gas lines in Richmond homes and stratas
Richmond houses from the 1960s to the 1990s in Seafair, Broadmoor and Blundell often have the gas meter on one side of the house and the tank or furnace in the garage. Adding a range or a BBQ on the far side means a longer run, so we plan the route through the garage, crawlspace or ceiling before quoting.
Townhouses in Terra Nova and Westwind, and City Centre condos, bring strata rules into it. Gas lines in shared walls or outside spaces usually need strata approval first, so check with your strata before booking, and we can schedule around building rules. Because we are based in Richmond, a visit from Steveston to Hamilton is a short drive.

Flavio TruzziLocal Guide · 4 months agoI can't recommend Encano Plumbing & Drain enough! They came to replace my dishwasher and immediately ran into a problem left behind by the previous installers, a metal piece that had been incorrectly fitted and was completely blocking access to remove the old unit. Rather than giving up or charging me extra to come back another day, Ed handled it on the spot, cutting through the obstruction efficiently and professionally. What really stood out was how thorough and tidy he was throughout the whole job. He kept the work area clean, and didn't leave me with a mess to deal with, which honestly isn't always a given. On top of that, he went out of his way to help me get rid of the old dishwasher, which saved me a huge headache. This is exactly the kind of tradesperson you want: calm under pressure, resourceful when things don't go to plan, and genuinely helpful beyond just the bare minimum.
